Just a quick question to any of the committee... re the ASRL navy vests.

Will they be high visibility fluro?

Re: SurfVest navy singets 9 months ago #37612

Matt, I reckon I read or heard somewhere that they're going to be HOT PINK!!!!

Or though, that may have been associated with Worlds' gear!

Let's see what the gurus slip on here.

Thanks Olly

Let's hope they are.

LSV have just sent out an e-mail stating high vis vests must be worn at all LSV events.

Let's hope our Navy vests will meet their standard so our members don't have to dig further into their pockets just to be lifesavers.

I am sure when the standards are written by LSV, common sense will prevail.

Matt,

LSV is only 14 years behind the times, as you are aware the optional use of helmets and safety vests was approved by SLSA in June 1998.

And I so advise!!

Not optional Greg...must. And it might have taken 14 years, but it is a good idea.

I just want to see if we can assist LSV with their policy so there is no need to double up with ASRL "Navy" singlets AND LSV "approved" singlets.

Personally I wear a SurfVest and don't want to have to be swapping and changing and buying different colours of different makes to suit the different "approvals".

That's all

Be advised

In a clear-thinking exercise:

helmets and vests were declared optional 14 years ago.

A slight sprinkling of sweeps, maybe one crew and sometimes only one crew member in unfavourable conditions at a carnival decided to wear helmets at their discretion.

No one opted for vests obviously because they didn't see the need to, otherwise they would have.

Now vests are compulsory for events only.

Crews train for maybe 8-10 hours a week in the boat in all conditions and haven't seen the need for them but they are now compulsory for maybe 3 rows x 5 minutes, 15 minutes during competition.

HI ALL

In NZ the new Piha Boatie vests will be Hi Vis " Hot Pink " on the top portion ( front and back to about the sternum level ) this still allows us to have our own club sponsor through the middle of the vest and also retain our own club colours and club identity on the beach ( hence the lower portion of the vest is black with our clubs green & red strips down the sides ) After many years of many Proud Piha Clubbies wearing the clubs colours we are able to adopt the new safety precautions and also retain our identity's on the beach. ( Also important for spectators on the beach that we don't all look the same ? ) we have also worked very closely with the Surf Vest People and will also be incorporating the surf Vest into the Piha Vests with the insertable floatation pads. I think the Surf vest guys have done a great job in producing a flotation device that allows us to still compete with a good degree of comfort and freedom.

This also allows us to retain a very successful Sponsorship program we have had and allow " Sponsor branding " space again whilst incorporating the Hi Vis Pink on the upper vest portion, Piha is also adopting a self imposed Mandatory Helmet wear in Large surf so we are doing our very best to ensure our rowers are not being exposed to any risks ( boat collisions / roll overs etc ) without the club doing its best to ensure the best possible safety approach ( hard to row Piha when not big surf as that's all there normally is !! )

we are lucky that we have worked closely with SLSNZ and they have been proactive in promoting the Hi Vis concept but also doing their best not to stifle club identity and existing sponsorship branding . Hopefully we will appear in Aus at some stage of the season to show the new kit off !!

Correct me if I'm wrong but were the colors for the vests not stipulated by SLSA as pink for women and green for men just before last years Aussies? Would it not make sense to be consistent with that. Or is that rule going to change as well!

Re: SurfVest navy singets 9 months ago #37627

It was the same over here, Green for Blokes and Pink for females, but they changed to the coming season as all PINK ! I assume SLSNZ is keeping in Sync with SLSA ?

Just heard on the radio that SLSA are seeking a suitable floatation device and head wear for competitors. Obviously nothing currently on the market meets their satisfaction?

Check out two Admin Circulars that came out of SLSA a few days ago. Various Vests and Helmets are to be tested.
