Kurrawa out WHERE TO NEXT? 1 year, 2 months ago #36352

Now that the decision has been made to finally get out of the BIG K where should the Aussies be held. By being pro-active maybe we can get the hierachy to take on board the feelings of the competitors. Maybe the ASRL can start a poll so we can have our opinions heard. For my thoughts I think Burleigh is an option but the event should be held at the end of APRIL.

Boats at Nth Burleigh. The rest Nth Kirra. Or everything at Nth Burleigh/Burleigh

That sounds like a great idea... so it prob won't happen though.

In 1989 Burleigh was moved to Coolangatta because the crews couldn't get across the gutter being hit by a wall of water on the bar.

Now that was unfair to every crew in the 4-5 races which were held over about two hours.

I recall that we moved to half a dozen beaches before the decision was made to race at Coolangatta which was only marginally better than anywhere else on the coast, with cans looking like a coat-hanger with the torrent coming out of the Tweed River.

Find another State please.

And I so advise!!

Southport, Surfers, Northcliffe, Broadbeach, Mermaid or Nobbys

Unfortunately all media is reporting it will be Nth Kirra. I couldn't think of a worse beach to row at apart from Redcliffe or Scarborough.

H5, After the last few weeks could not get a better venue . There has been a 3-4 foot wave constantly for 4 weeks. Had the goat boat out last weekend and really clubbed it. The Pier has had great lumpy swells going all the way to the beach. The area that the worlds were held had a great 2-3 foot consitent even wave and I have not seen so many boardriders in that area before. The only problem King tides.

Burleigh..........you could hold the whole carnival there.......89 Greg when we had the Aussies there was cyclonic right up and down the coast.........forget Southport or Northcliffe...the further north you go the nastier it gets....we have had 2 carnivlas canned at Southport in the last 2 years........whatever Kurrawa dishes up you can tack on at least 2 foot on top of that at Southport.......

Burleigh to North Burleigh would be a no brainer..........great surf - no where near the drag that builds up on the exposed beaches/strectches...........more even break that will hold a wave............Nth Kirra is a shyt beach logistically..nil brascoes, nil shops, nil atmoshpere....how many 4WD's got bogged trying to get out of the joint......at least 6 that I saw.

Huge amount of accom within walking distance of Burleigh also plus close shops for supplies.....Burleigh is a surf beach that doesnt get as wild as Kurrawa can do...drivivng down to Nth Kirra on Friday and looking at Burleigh had many shaking their heads - its was a perfect, 2 -3 foot even breaking wave..........

There is an article in the Gold Coast Bulletin this morning saying Burleigh is under consideration with Shannon Esckstien saying it would be a perfect venue surf wise..........can only hope Nth Kirra isnt a done deal
First we was winning....then we was swimming

Re: Kurrawa out WHERE TO NEXT? 1 year, 2 months ago #36371

why are we still only considering the gold coast as a viable option.

what about awesome beaches like the below

Lorne
Manly / Queenscliff
mollymook
coffs harbour

(this list is only limited to the above as they are the ones i have competed at that would be capable of holding an Australian titles, i am sure there are countless more to add to the list so please feel free.)

some ones to consider for the quality of beach but where the facilities might be a little marginal:

7 mile beach at kiama
lennox head and north to byron
And shepherds we shall be,
For Thee, my Lord, for Thee.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls shall it ever be.
In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti.

I may be biased but you forgot to include some other Sydney Beaches Oracle !

A combined Bondi/Coogee/Maroubra Aussies would be pretty damn good with finals being staged for TV coverage at Bondi on the Sunday. Heaven help the thought with various councils in getting it up but a few of you will remember a Sydney Branch champs ran at Bondi in big surf a few years back - one of the fairest breaks for surf boats on the East Coast

We are only considering Gold Coast beaches because that's what SLSA is locked in to.

Sunshine coast in 2014.

Re: Kurrawa out WHERE TO NEXT? 1 year, 2 months ago #36375

Have to agree with Termite
Nth Burleigh the next best spot, but will SLSA listen

Trivia
For those who think our sport isn't dying
1993 A Crews starters 167
2012 A Crews starters 45
Think about it

If we go to Nth Kirra
A crews 20???????

Rick, what were the total number of starters ( A and Ressies ) in 1993 and 2012. Just curious if it is a general drop or something else!
