Sad to advise that Stuart passed away last Friday.
Stuart was a long time Sweep and rower for the Bungan Beach Surf Club.
In the Mid 80's he switched back from Sweeping to rowing and won back to back Open Men's Gold at the Australian Championship at something like the age of 41 years.
Stuart was a special athlete and continued to row for many years in different crews after he shifted to live in Qld.
Remembering Stuart his family and friends at this sad time.
Stuart McNeil / London Jones
It is with great sadness that I advise that Stuart McNeil/London Jones passed away on the 22nd December 2017.
Stuart had not been well over the last 12 months and eventually suffered a stroke and rowed his last race two days later.
Stuart/ London started his surf lifesaving career at Bungan Beach Surf Club where he was a member of the Bungan Beach Open Men’s Crew which competed from 1969 through to 1987.
Stuart moved to Queensland changed his name to London Jones (as in his own words there was nothing left to do as Stuart McNeil) and then went on to row and coach at Kurrawa, Palm Beach, and Rainbow Bay. He last competed at the 2017 Australian Masters Championships for Kurrawa.
His rowing career last 48 years, too many strokes to count to much fun to forget.
His results are not a reflection of the impact he had during these years he was a fierce competitor, extravert and somewhat eccentric but he always back it up when racing.
Whilst at Bungan he achieved;
1x Australian Surf Life Saving Representative Team 1987 (not only did he compete in the Boat he also swam in the 4 Man Surf Team during the Test series against NZ)
2x Australian Open Championships 1984-85 & 1985-86
3x Second Australian Open Championships 1970-71, 1971-72 & 1986-87
1x NSW State Open Championship 1984-85
3x Second NSW State Championships 1969-70, 1970-71 and 1986-87
Several Sydney Northern Beaches Branch Teams
1x Second Masters World Championship 2007 Rainbow Bay
2x Australian Masters Championships Rainbow Bay
1x Second and Third Australian Masters Championships Rainbow Bay
and numerous Branch and Winter Sun Championships
Stuart also competed in Triathlon Events and won the Triathlon World Championships (40-45years) in 1987 after being the Men’s outright winner at the Nepean Triathlon.
He was a great friend and team mate, he will be missed by many, he will be remembered by those who he rowed with and against.
Thanks for the memories, the good times and the thrills of surfboat rowing.
Howard Christie (fellow boat rower and mate)
