SLSA Award Holders: All persons using SLSA (owned) craft for operational activities (e.g. lifesaving and surf sports) must be qualified and currently proficient with the appropriate SLSA award applicable to the craft.
New Members: Persons who are not the holder of a current SLSA award and wish to use SLSA (owned) craft must have met the prerequisites for the training in the appropriate award (SRC or BM) applicable to the usage of the craft. Should a person not gain the required award within four months the prerequisites requirements (i.e. swim assessment) need to be reassessed for the individual to continue to use SLSA craft.
Initial instruction/training must include clear instructions or training protocols on how to use the equipment, particularly in regard to injury prevention and survival in the event of a possible accident or loss of craft.
Due to medical advice and developmental welfare, members under the age of 15 years are not to undertake high intensity training and are not permitted to compete in surf boats or surf skis.
Formalised competition using surf boats and surf skis is permissible for members 15 years of age or over (who are proficient Bronze medallion holders) with the proviso that the U/17 Ironman and Ironwoman events will not include a surf ski leg.
In addition, members are not permitted to compete in open age category Ironman and Ironwoman event until they reach 16 years of age.
This does not preclude members under the age of 15 years) participating in non-high intensity based skill sessions with the added consideration that all members under 15 years of age when skill training in surf boats and members under the age of 15 years on surf skis are supported by a suitably qualified coach. Sessions in surf should only be undertaken after a risk assessment is performed and in conditions that do not place participants at risk due to age or competence.
Competition in IRB events or a Surf Boat Sweep is not permitted until a member has met the appropriate competition prerequisites. Definition of High Intensity:
For the purposes of this policy ‘high intensity’ refers to training and activity that would exceed skill development and/or cause the body to be exposed to forces that require the individual to exert more force or strength that is not suitable to their age, gender or experience. Examples include:
• activity in surf where the potential to be exposed to risk situations may occur due to skill level, development of participant and risk of injury
• training which exposes individuals to stresses that are not developmental or skilled based.
