newsASRL Open

We are now just weeks away from the 2012 Stockton Open on the 10, 11 & 12 of February. The Stockton Surf Club and Hunter Branch along with the Newcastle City Council are doing a great job to showcase this event for us.

Entries close with the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it at midnight on Friday 20 January. Late entries will attract a 50% loading and will only be accepted for 1 week after the closing date. Entry forms are available on the ASRL website www.asrl.com.au

The program can be found on the website and will be updated with actual times etc as soon as we have final entries and drawers sorted.

ASRL Open a Three-Day Event

Just to confirm that we do understand the difficulties some crew will face if they are drawn to compete on the Friday but this is a feature of the growth of this event. Sure some will argue that we can cram everybody into two days finishing late on Sunday and hope like hell that we have no stoppages, tough conditions or anything else to holds us up. Others will argue that races can be run with shorter turn around times but the reality is that at just about all events including the Australians where we have the best Officials available the best that can be achieved is a seven minute turn around.

The majority of members, (over 80%) when asked in a recent survey responded that they wanted the event to run over three days so everybody gets better less rushed racing and most importantly soft cuts.

This will be a great three days of racing featuring the full-blown National Interstate on Friday, the Battle of the Ditch for Open Men & Open Women against the top NZ crews on Saturday and then all finals on Sunday. If your serious about your competition the Open with close to 300 crew entries is a must go.

Elimination V Round Robin at Nationals

In a thread on the website several questions have been asked about the process on how this decision was reached and if the ASRL had been consulted. A glitch did occur in that the SLS Circular was released prior to the ASRL being conferred with for which acknowledgment has been made by SLS. We accept that this was a simple mistake as the SBC is still in its infancy and processes still need to be understood by all involved.

That said we have in the last week conferred back through our committee to seek comment and some direction to put back to SLSA on the issue. The membership must remember that each year for the last 3 or 4 we have conducted an all of membership survey where we seek your response and input to a wide range of questions. In the last three years one of the questions was to your preference for RR of Elimination at the National Championship. The majority response to this question was for Elimination racing and that was discussed at a May conference of the ASRL and ultimately reported back to SLSA.

The following is an email that has been sent to SLSA but just to be clear when we spoke to the Referee about this issue the very reasonable points that were made by him in explaining the reasons for the decision included:

  • In previous years we could run from 7am to 5pm – we are now restricted to 8am- 4pm at the Nationals
  • We have ditched Tuesday from this year's calendar starting on Wednesday
  • They have to plan for only 4 hours racing on Friday
  • Boats have to finished by around 1pm on Sunday
  • A lot of available time has been lost under the new arrangements and with the expected number of crews attending it will become very hard to fit in if racing RR in adverse conditions
  • Last year with reasonable conditions the best they could achieve was an 7 minute turn round time
  • All these things when put together could force severe cuts if racing RR
  • By running elimination of 6 boats – 4 through in R1 and then a soft cut repechage almost all crews get to round three
  • Under elimination it means that the cuts can be soft the whole way through i.e. 6 boats drop 2 and that the officials do have the ability to make change to the format in adverse conditions from round one unlike RR where the three rounds must be completed before change can happen

"The SBC wishes to advise that we have in the past as the ASRL taken a poll of our members and at that time the majority supported Elimination racing at the National Championship and consequentially this has previously been advised in writing to SLSA.

This is always a tricky subject, as many rowers believe it is better to ensure three rows at all events, maybe at the expense a harsh cut if conditions dictate. While others are firmly in the camp that at the National Championship racing should always be elimination.

At this time based on a very short lead time for us to properly hold a full face to face committee discussion and certainly no time to go back to the full rowing community for consultation we can only base our comment on what we have previously canvassed which resulted in majority supporting Elimination racing at the National Championship. That said we are comfortable that for this year if time permits that the event be held under RR rules with a reasonable soft cut at the end of the RR if that suits the program. If however the Referee isn't confident that a reasonable cut can be assured after the RR then we ask that Elimination be the order of the day with Repecharge and soft cuts of 4 crews through each time."

Bert Hunt
President ASRL

Hello to all our boat rowers and welcome to the new season. A lot has happened during this off season that has kept your committee pretty busy so let's try to bring you all up to date.

ASRL Open:

ASRL Open Stockton 2012We were originally set down for Dixon Park (Newcastle) but after taking advice it was decided that the beach conditions could be too risky to stay at that venue. Instead of mucking around we made the early call to shift and as we were already well committed into the Newcastle Shire we settled on Stockton as the venue. Organisation is progressing well under the stewardship of Frank Veltman who has been appointed as Race Director. We are extremely lucky to have Rhonda Scruton the CEO of Hunter Branch, the staff at Newcastle Shire and a great like Stockton to help make this event happen. Frank will be providing regular Open updates via the website and Newcastle have provided a website linking you to accommodation properties. The City of Newcastle will be doing everything possible to provide extra Ferry services to all a majority of people to stay in Newcastle proper with easy, regular and quick Ferry access to Stockton beach. This will include a shuttle bus service from the Ferry to the Beach and back.

Sponsors:

We have Navy on board with us again which has been a massive boost in assisting in the development of our sport around the country. We will again be running Navy Series events in every State bar the NT that will lead crews into representative honours at the ASRL Open. HSM has been very successful in further developing second tier sponsors that you will notice being highlighted on our website. Please where ever possible support all sponsors and don't be afraid to walk up to their representatives and say thank you, a little recognition is noticed and goes a long way.

Surf Boat Committee:

Surf Boat CommitteeSome discussion has taken place around the establishment of the National Surf Boat Committee reporting directly to the Director of Surf Sports and the Surf Sports Committee of SLSA. When the ASRL was first formed it was felt by a section of boat competitors that the surf boat section was being left behind. This group set about developing surf boat competition sometimes in direct competition or conflict with the general SLS business. Happily much has been achieved over the years to the point where the ASRL was approached by SLSA some 18 months ago to form a new committee representing all boat rowers regardless of their affiliation with the ASRL. This process took some time to get right as both parties lobbied to find the best possible outcome.

Agreement was reached a couple of months ago and the first meeting of the new committee has been held. The charter is basically to be the voice of the surf boat section, we will be making recommendations back to SLSA as their appointed committee so in other words advising from inside the tent. This is a far stronger position for the ASRL to be in as the full committee of the ASRL also form the full committee of the SBC with the President of the ASRL as Chair of the new SBC.

To give an indication of what has already been achieved with the full cooperation of all parties:

  • The National Interstate Championship event normally held as part of the all discipline Interstate event with only Open Men & Women's crews involved has now been agreed to be held at the ASRL Open on the Friday night
  • This will now include all 6 divisions of racing plus the full Relay so crews selected to represent will all be recognised as full blown State representatives
  • The selection process has changed to include both the State SLS selectors and your State rowing body. Your Navy Series in each State will be included into the selection process so the best performing crews will have every chance of being selected
  • The ASRL will for the large part fund the Interstate Championship through the Navy involvement with travel and gear subsidies to all crews which is a massive improvement on what happened in the past for the National Interstate crews
  • The Northern Territory is included in this event but must have at least 2 NT based crews before they will be allowed to draft outside crews
  • We are in talks with both SLSA & SLSNZ for the introduction of a full blown Test Match event each year alternating between Australia and New Zealand. This is being discussed favourably by both associations and while it won't happen this year we are pretty confident it will happen. The plan is to recognise both senior Men and Women's in the Test match initially and to see if an age division may be added in the future.
  • For this season the ASRL will be going ahead with the Battle of the Ditch in senior Men & Women's divisions to be held as a feature at the ASRL Open so something for our top crews to aim at. The two Australian crews will be the winners of the Interstate Championship event to be held on the Friday night at the Open
  • The ASRL committee has asked that this committee make up the Boat Panel at the National Championships. The thought is that if we are to take on all this responsibility we should place ourselves in the position to be the chief advisor
  • In our survey after the last Australian Championship you answered very clearly that you wanted to be part of the main event at the Aussies. Many of us feel that we have lost the Amphitheatre atmosphere for our finals and that our finalists aren't receiving the recognition they deserve. To this end we have been successful in having all finals now moved back onto the Sunday Championship Day. Finals will be staggered in time to allow each division to be properly introduced to the crowd
  • We are in discussion with SLSA to have one of the main arenas made available to us from close of business on the Saturday afternoon so we can make sure we have a good set of cans to race with on Sunday. If we can make this work it will place boats in a very prominent beach position

Your committee members can be found here so as always if you want to ask a question we will all try to provide the answer.

Have a great season of competition and above all else enjoyment.

President ASRL

The Navy Australian Surf Rowers League (ASRL) series commenced in an action packed weekend launching the season on the beaches of Surfers Paradise, on the weekend of 5th and 6th November, 2011.  Over 60 crews gathered on the Gold Coast to battle it out in the Open Mens, Open Womens, Under 19 Men and Masters division. The event also coincided with the Queensland State and Junior Beach Volleyball Championships on the same beach.

Navy and ASRL are a good fit and Navy's sponsorship of the sport assists the organization to recruit more lifesavers. The importance of which cannot be underestimated said, Bert Hunt, President of ASRL,

"The more lifesavers are in the water, the more lives saved. It is amazing when you think about the synergies between Navy and ASRL while Navy protects the Australian coastline, the ASRL protects the shores of every state and territory around the country," he said.

The event kicked off early Saturday morning with Masters Division, Womens, Reserves and Under 23 Men providing good racing all day in hot weather almost perfect for surf boat racing – a one metre swell with a tricky shore break on the way out and good runs on the way back in

One of the many highlights for the public and competitors over the weekend was the displays conducted by 723 Squadron Augusta A109E, piloted by LEUT Ben Lancaster and his crew of LEUT Andrew Serchen and LSA Dan Colbert.

Saturday started with the hot weather and a 1.5 metre swell. A 10 knot easterly wind meant a hard run out but a fast return leg to the beach.

Sunday continued with the hot conditions and the official media launch attended by CDRE David Letts, Commanding Officer NHQ-SQ (CMDR Lachlan King), President of the ASRL Mr Bert Hunt and Gold Coast Councillor Suzie Douglas.

With a beautiful start to the day the boats continued to compete socially through the morning until 1030 when it was time for the Official Launch and the formation shot of over 35 surf boats heading out to sea with Navy's Augusta 109 and the city skyline creating a picturesque backdrop.

Navy-ASRL Season Opening at Surfers Paradise

Around 11am an easterly change which brought 15 to 20 knot winds and squally conditions tested all crews as they began to form up but due to great skills by all crews the .

The event provides a valuable economic contribution to the city of the Gold Coast with 5,500 visitors including competitors, supporters, families and friends attending the event. The sun and surf provides the backdrop for this competition but, as in the Navy, it is the contribution of each individual who make up the winning team.
