The ASRL in conjunction with HSM Group are delighted to announce that the League are entering into formal discussions with Australian Defence Force Recruiting to have the Royal Australian Navy as official naming rights sponsor for the 2009 ASRL National Surfboat Premiership.
The slogan “Navy The Team
Works ” will become very familiar to us all over Australia in the coming
summer months. Navy involvement isn’t new to Surfboats as they are also
the current Major Sponsor of the Navy George Bass Surfboat Marathon.
This sponsorship extension into the grass roots level of Surfboats will
help us develop a National Series that is aimed to reach every corner
of the country.
As time is now very tight with our proposed first event mid November we
probably need to bite the bullet and get the concept out so everyone
can start planning. We will be unable to lock it all together until we
have sign off but we are pretty well advanced in certain areas so here
goes:
This is a State based event. The idea is to try to minimize travelling
as much as possible especially in the larger States. Each State Series
will run on a point score system that will be administered
independently by each State Rowers Group. What this means is that you
will have a certain number of available carnivals being conducted in
your State between November & the end of January. These could take
the form of a sliding scale of points with a higher emphasis on some
events. At the end of the State Series each State will select its team
to contest the Interstate Challenge. This Interstate Challenge is very
successfully conducted as twilight meet on the Friday prior to the ASRL
Open. Each State will select the best crew in each of the 6 divisions.
It is hoped that the overall Series finances will allow for a subsidy
to each State to help with outfitting & travel for all Interstate
teams so we have a full compliment in each division.
It is further hoped to have some special prizes for simply contesting
the Series in each State. Finally we are working towards achieving
Press exposure through our supplying Press Reports & Photos to the
Papers and Television exposure both via Regional news reports. We are
also hopeful of a Documentary built around the entire series. To
achieve this we are trying to stretch the budget to cover the cost of
having TV footage shot in each State at selected events plus the
Interstate Challenge & ASRL Open. Lots to do but we have the will
and support from all States so as long as you all get on board this
will work and build year by year.
What’s in it for the crews will be that you will be part of a National
Series. All crews will be provided with racing singlet’s, caps, boat
logos, car stickers, event posters etc. Every competing crew will be
eligible for the subsidized State Team selection. Crews will be
eligible for special event product drawers. This sponsor is planning to
make this a big deal so beach promotion at selection locations will be
designed to pull a crowd.
Interstate crews are welcome to compete in any Series race and it will
be up to the individual State Rowers League to decide if they allocate
points to traveling crews competing out of State i.e. Qld crews at
Coffs or Vic crews at Mollymook.
Series entry is looking like $35 per head which will include membership
of the ASRL. This figure will be confirmed hopefully in the next week.
Individual carnival entry fees payable to the host club will still
apply. As we are starting at such a late date we have decided not to
further confuse the calendar by adding more dates but to work within
the existing structure. An earlier start next season will at least let
us talk to all the players before setting a season program but that’s
for next year.
